Across can be set up to directly communicate with MT tools such as Google Translate or Deepl.
There is no necessity to integrate GT4T in this process as Across obtains the desired translations directly from the translation machine.
While 100 % matches are naturally filled in from the TM, one can configure Across to populate all segments e.g. below 80 % with MT and leave all segments above 80 % to be processed from the fuzzy matches by a human.

Is this something a freelance translator can do if the PM hasn't done so?

Is this something that a PM can prevent a freelance translator to do?

I still don't know the answer to the questions above, but I've found how to set up DeepL in Across.

From the Help:
Machine Translation Availability

Please note the following information on the availability of machine translation to the various players who can be integrated in your translation workflows:

crossGrid: Machine translation cannot be used on the Trusted Server side. (During pre-translation, crossTank hits are inserted, but not machine translation hits.)

Exception: If the Trusted Server has the right to modify the project settings, machine translation can be added on the Trusted Server side and be used locally for pre-translation.
crossWAN: Offline Clients can use machine translation for pre-translation with the project settings of the Across Server.

crossWeb: In crossWeb, machine translation can be used for pre-translation. ("Pre-translation on the fly" does not support the use of machine translation. Therefore, the respective crossTank hits will be inserted when using pre-translation on the fly, but not machine translation hits.)

Machine Pre-translation in Across

In Across, the machine translation is performed within the scope of a pre-translation. For this purpose, the sentences of the source document are matched against the existing translation units in crossTank. Any existing 100% matches can be inserted automatically in the translation. Additionally, when using machine translation plugins, the sentences of the source document are sent to the MT systems, pre-translated, and also inserted in the translation.

The machine translation can be configured in such a way that only source sentences for which no suitable translation units are available in crossTank are machine-translated (see below).

First you have to configure DeepL, by entering the API key via the System Settings:

Then you have to activate DeepL MT in the Project Settings:

Now, when you create a new project, Across will pretranslate all segments via DeepL. I don't know, if it's possible to use DeepL segment-wise on the fly, while translating the project.

For suggestions from MT Engines during the translation you should maybe consider using "Cross Search" And maybe one can configure Deepl to deliver suggestions. I did not check this out yet.

I received this answer to my two questions from Across Support:
Hi Hans,

Thank you for your request.
As you are working for a customer, they will need to give you the allowance to use the Machine Translator Tool. They will need to allo w it in the project settings.

I asked:
One more question: whose DeepL API key will be used?

And: if I have to enter my own, will the client have access to it?
Support replied:
Apologies for the missinformation about MT.
Unfortunately, as an offline user, you may only use MT (DeepL) for pre-translations and not the Tool itself. I have added a screenshot of the MT availablility for you.
So basically as an offliner, the MT tool is not available.
I hope it helps.
Hello,

I have encounter the following error after opening Across, import the cap file, and try to login to client's server.

"Unexpected error occurred inside a LocalDB instance API method call. See the Windows Application event log for error details."

I tried installing Across in other PC and Across works fine, but the database thing just won't work on my working PC. I have looked through everything and haven't found any similar problem like mine. Could anyone please advice me on this?

Thanks!

If you search with this error message on the Web, you will find some answers to such a problem. It seems to be a SQL implementation problem. Cannot say which is yours, but try some of the solutions explained.

Good luck!

PEBackupRestoreTool for Across 6.3 | But does it work?

Post title: But does it work?

Has anyone successfully restored a backup using this tool? I make the backup files routinely, but I have zero confidence in anything related Across, so it would be nice to get verification that it has actually worked for someone.

(Across is currently refusing to start for me, and I am considering reinstalling, but I am loath to gamble the several thousand words of translation I've already done on the competence of Across developers, as anyone who has ever used Across will understand.)

Post title: Helpful advice from helpdesk

I had this problem last night. The helpdesk got back to me this morning with the following comment:

"Please check if there are not finished tasks. You can do this by clicking on "Display finished tasks". If there are still finished tasks, please delete them. After this you should be able to deliver your current one".

I had already checked with the client that they had unassigned me from my previous task (they said they had) but when I clicked on the "My tasks" tile in the top left corner of the dashboard and ticked the "Display finished tasks" box once that view had opened, there was a task sitting there. I clicked "Remove" (bottom right) to delete it, and my problem was resolved. Until the helpdesk told me this I had assumed that there was nothing I could do at my end.

PS The helpdesk thinks I may have had this issue because I had problems delivering the previous task (and Across did indeed crash during delivery, so that may have been why it was still sitting on my system)

Yes, it is possible. crossWeb shortcuts which conflicts with typing the Polish diacritics in crossDesk Web can be changed by adjusting the server settings.

Is it possible, that my client disabled this?
Not even 99% matches are displayed and even after confirming a segment when I perform concordance search there are no results. And if so, why would he do it?

Ok. Yess he can disable the usage of fuzzy match translations, there simply could not be any fuzzy matches, he could have forgotten to send them to you, your fuzzy search could have slipped to the wrong languages there can be a filter from the client and there could be a filter in your across. And there could be a great deal of other things.

What I do in those cases: I check out the concordance search. Use a simple single word such as "he", "she" or "it" or "the" or whatever and make sure that there are no filters and that you are using the right languages.
