I have just started using Across. There's a lot of negative reviews about Across and it's true that the installation was probably the worst nightmare of any software I have installed. The problem wasn't Across itself but the SQL Server that it tried to install. It seems that my computer already had other SQL Servers installed for other software and they interfered with each other. Fortunately I am fairly familiar with SQL Servers but I had resort to using the command prompt and "osql" and "sqlcmd" commands to install the SQL Server. It still took me all afternoon. How someone unfamiliar with the under-the-hood workings of computer software could install it, I really don't know.
However, once installed I have been relatively impressed. The operation so far (it's still my first day) has been relatively smooth and it's quite fast. It does need a few more mouseclicks than some others, but that could be that I am not yet familiar with the keyboard shortcuts.
One question I have, though, is whether there is any way to make multiple translation memories. My TMs are divided up by client and I really don't want to mix them up. Importing a TMX used for a client from a different CAT (I also use Studio and Wordfast, depending on the job and file type) went quite smoothly and there was a good editing window that allowed me to correct a few TM units that had errors. However, as far as I can tell, there is no provision to "create" a TM, it just all seems to go into the crossTank data base.
I really want to keep my TMs distinct by client. Especially since I will want to export the TMX after the project and merge it into the rest of the client's TM. Is there any way to do this that anyone knows?
