Cannot enable CrossTank

Hi,

I've been working on Across 6.0 PE. While I was working on a huge project, my computer felt down and I had to reboot it.
Across runs normally except crossTank as I got following message :

Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 11.0
Unspecified Error
Cannot open database "crossTank_18h17m_03_02_2016" requested by the login. The login failed. (107, CrossTankFactory.cpp)

I am in touch with Across helpdesk and they suggest to reinstall Across and do a Repair.
But I fear that after executing this tasks I won't be able to retrieve crossTank content.

Does anyone got a solution ?

Hi there,

I just realized that the master slide of a PPTX (PowerPoint 2010) file was not checked into Across for translation, which means that I have to go back and translate the text on the master slide (in my case, it's the footer for all slides) outside of Across.

Why is that? Anyone have the same 'problem'?

I checked the system settings for the PPTX format, but apart from Object and Image I couldn't change or add any elements. I tried a PPT file again (older PowerPoint version) and the texts on the master slides were checked in for translation.

Since I am an online user in an Across server environment and can check out the translated files myself, I can edit them in PowerPoint afterward. But what about our offline translators who send back the CRU files once they have finished their translations? Any text written on the master slides will still be in the source language...

Does anyone have any idea why the master slide texts don't show up for translation? Any help is appreciated.

I had this situation; not because I had upgraded to 6.3, but because my computer crashed completely & had to be completely re-set. Unfortunately, it was re-set with Windows 10, and after re-installing Across 6.0 it kept telling me that "Cross tank is disabled" (Cross term as well, incidentally).

After a one-hour support phone call with Across today, the support chap came to the conclusion that it might be due to the fact that Across 6.0 does not support Windows 10...

Bugger.

I just downloaded the installation programm (6.3), but I am reluctant to install it, for more than 1 reason:

A) This forum.
B) No prices on the Across website.
C) It is the worse CAT I came across till sofar, but some clients seem to love it (cheap).
D) Still have 6.0

- So, if it isn't free anymore, how much do you have to pay?
- Can you still do the occassional jobs on 6.0?
- What is so great about this new version?
- Is 6.3 still as slow as a snail, or does it finally works as a real CAT should?
- Did they change their policy, and is the tool also compatible with other formats?
- Last, but not least.... Is there any reason to acquire the new version, other than clients are asking for it?

I am curious about your responses.

Hallo,

I can't insert a translation for certain words because the options are greyed out: "different 100% translations exist for the source, therefore pre-translation will not be possible".

I am, however, not "pre-translating", I am translating the document. Can someone tell me how I can get off the "pre-translation" mode?

You don't have to pay anything if you are working on client projects one by one.

You only need to upgrade to premium if 1) you want to work on your own projects, 2) if you want to work on projects for multiple clients simultaneously.

I think this is the most original idea any CAT developer has come up with.
Such creativity should rather be used to make the software a little less counter-productive.

I do agree with Giia, as I have tried to solve this activation/reactivation problem several times and Across Help is just useless. There must be compatibility problems with Windows 10, but they do not admit it. Also, I think this is not normal nowadays that they insist to switch off firewalls and antivirus for proper installing and maybe even using the programme.
I think they will face problems with big clients as well, as it seems, that their server editions are unstable too. My client has been making restarts at least once a week during last 6 months (even they still use 6.0 today). As they will implement 6.3 in May, I will loose all Across projects, but I hope they will switch more projects to SDL or any other CAT soon.

Like many translators, after many happy years of using Across for free, I was surprised to learn of the new Basic/Premium Editions and the drastic limitations of the former.

While I can understand that the company wants to make money, going from a free service to one requiring
EUR 20/month is beyond translator unfriendly, especially considering that most professional translators would be willing to dish out the money to buy a license for a one-time fee.

However, my real complaint relates to the lack of transparency regarding what the programs can/cannot do.

With me, this started with being locked out of Across because I had not updated my CrossMarket credentials on time.

A support person at Across scheduled a phone session with me and we were able to solve the problem. One of the things he suggested was installing the newest patch. What he neglected to mention was that I would no longer be able to generate target documents or work with different clients sequentially.

Now the back and forth with Across begins: After losing a potential job with a new client because I could not retrieve the documents due to "tasks being open on another server," now another support person simply kept insisting that I needed to close all previous tasks and kept directing me to the documentation.

However, due to the new installation, the tasks were no longer visible. Also, they had all been uploaded so there was nothing open. He also kept writing that I could not work with different clients simultaneously, which was not the case.

After reading the documentation, I came to the conclusion that I was basically going to be forced to upgrade.

Since I had not heard back from the support person after our last email correspondence, I decided to call customer service and the person there told me that the Basic Edition CAN BE USED with different clients as long as it is SEQUENTIAL, WHICH IS NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE. He also said that my problem was probably due to a coding error from Across's side.

This problem has now been going on for a week now and still no resolution.

I can only hope that Across starts to take more interest in what will now be a much broader customer base and that the translation community (agencies and associations) begins to address these issues with Across in our favor.

Any feedback/suggestions from others would be appreciated.

After going and back forth with Across, I have received very courteous telephone assistance from customer support via TeamViewer and the problem was resolved.

While I do feel that my initial frustrations were justified, as it turns out, the problem was not difficult to solve.

In my case, the list of completed tasks were no longer visible after installing the latest patch. Then, they reappeared again. Hidden way at the bottom was one apparently "open" task.

Once this task was deleted, I was able to retrieve the task of a second client (sequentially, not simultaneously) without a problem.

This is something for Basic Edition users to keep in mind.

I'm a long time Across user (since 2005), and I use Windows 10, together with the new Across 6.3 full version, and it is driving me crazy.
*Phone support is replaced by a system, where you have to create two different tickets to get support, in two different places.
*A "profiling mode", that counts your translation output, but makes the program so slow, that you cannot log on the clients' servers.
*A forced use of the Cross Markets platform.
*Constant trouble with clients' server versions. constant logon-trouble, constant trouble in general.

Looks to me, as if this is a classical case of premature release and I'm NOT amused.

I apologize, if this is a beginner's question, but I could not find the answer in the Help.

Can I set a paragraph as final (translated) and move to the next untouched paragraph in one step, using a single key shortcut?
So far I have done this in 2 stages, first ctrl+alt+enter for setting the paragraph as final, and then alt+right arrow to move to the next untouched.
As I am working now on an update to an existing translation, a great deal of the text has already been translated, and the untouched paragraphs are scattered between the pre-translated ones. Being able to do this with a single shortcut would be very useful.

Can this be done?

Dear Yiftah,

according to the Across manual ( [url removed] ) on page 416 the shortcut should be:
Ctrl+Alt+Z
Set paragraph to a final editing state (e.g. "translated") and go to next untouched paragraph. Pre-translated paragraphs between the current paragraph and the next untouched paragraph are automatically set to the final editing state.

The manual is also available in German ( [url removed] )

Since I do not have an open across project at the moment I was not able to test the shortcut.

Across freezes in QM Batch mode for me too, specifically during spell check. Whenever I try to correct an error or add a legitimate word to the dictionary, Across just completely freezes up. It's utterly maddening. I never have this problem with either SDL Trados Studio or memoQ 2015. I think Across doesn't like Microsoft Office or something. Whatever the issue with it is, I wish they'd fix it, because it really is an extremely aggravating problem.

Hello everyone,

I think that your comments have already answered some of my questions. But again, I just wanted to make sure that I understood correctly them. Thank you so much in advance.

1- First of all, The Across Personal Edition - the former standalone version- was always free of charge and never chargable, wasn't it? Also, it allowed the users to get target documents checking them out, right?
Now, the Basic Edition replaced The Across Personal Edition (standalone version). I mean, the Basic Edition is also always free of charge for everyone. But the most important difference is that it does not allow the user to check out, isn't it?

2-By the way, does anyone have an idea about the free Across for students? For example, do you know whether the Personal Standalone Edition - the former one- and the free Across for students have the same features in the past or not? For example, did both of them allow users to check out?
Now, in what ways is Across Translator Basic Edition different from the free Across for students? Does the one for students allow the users to get target documents?

3- While using Basic Edition, it is not possible for anyone to view my tasks because it is single user environment like Personal Edition, isn't it?

4- Which free CAT tool do you advise instead of Across?
